Report of 'The 11th Central European Conference - Chemistry towards Biology'

Chemistry towards Biology meeting (CTB11) was held on 1 – 4th July 2024 in Kraków, Poland. The conference took place at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Jagiellonian University in a modern building located on the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Jagiellonian University Revival.

The CTB11 edition was the continuation of the series of successful meetings aimed at scientific discussion and cooperation among researchers working at the intersection of chemistry and biology. The subject of the meeting was “Understanding molecular processes in living systems – towards biomedical applications” and it included topics like”

  • Bioinorganic Chemistry
  • Biospectroscopy and Bioimaging
  • Pharmaceutical Biocatalysis
  • New Materials in Medicine and Environmental Protection
  • Structural Biology.

More than 120 participants from several countries around the world (France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland,) that represented more than 20 institutions presented their recent results.

Plenary lectures were given by professors: Luis Arnaut, Chemistry Department, University of Coimbra, Richard Daniellou (AgroParisTech, Orleans), Andrew J. deMello (Institute for Chemical and Bioengineering, Department of Chemistry and Applied Bioscience), Wiesław Gruszecki (Department of Biophysics, Institute of Physics, Maria Curie-Sklodowska University), Marcin Nowotny (International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw), Stephané Petoud (Center for Molecular Biophysics, CNRS, INSERM, Orléans France), Harald Schwalbe (Center for Biomolecular Magnetic Resonance (BMRZ), Goethe Universität, Frankfurt) and Daniela Valensin (Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Pharmacy, University of Siena, Italy).

The attendees had also a chance to listen to 11 invited lectures, and 33 short communications as well as discuss 46 poster presentations (https://ctb11.confer.uj.edu.pl/programme). Among the all posters, the committee awarded the four best presentations of Young Scientists.

Except for the interesting scientific program, the Organizers prepared additional social events among them the Welcome Party at the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Jagiellonian University Revival, the tour of Wieliczka Salt Mine, and the conference dinner at Niepołomice Castle.
